This film has a strange history, one which begins in a place I can’t actually type. But let us just say, nobody, least of all me, expected it to become the cult classic it is now.

The Singing Richie: Life and Death, was a coverup for something else, which it taped over. I wrote an article of the same title for the paper I was publishing at the time, but otherwise The Singing Richie languished in obscurity. Then, for some reason, it came back.

Everyone hated it. They always did. Perhaps that’s why it spread so well – people love to hate something.

Presently, the Singing Richie’s song appeared on a compilation CD – which I cannot ever rerelease, since much of the material is copyright someone else – and then, in 2011, on a CD of all original material.

But that is a sidetrack.

Here, for the first time publicly available, is the original Singing Richie music video. Lyrics here.

Back in 2005, one year after GoldenWorks Pictures’s original founding, we bought this domain name and made our first page. We hosted with 1and1.com (don’t do that) at the time; our site was basic and unsightly. With our cheap (free?) hosting package, we could only have five pages, plus a disco Flash intro. I had no idea how to code anything (I still don’t). We had a few excerpts from books I’d written at the time, some photos from a recent trip, and a map-pack for a game we used to play called Legends. Since our page cap was so low, we had five really long pages.

Then we transferred the registry to Godaddy.com. It didn’t remember our old site, so we went from little to nothing. We talked about getting the site going again. We never did. For years, GWP was nothing more than padding for Godaddy’s pocket. A couple attempts at using their awful dashboard, and we got a plain text page up. It looked like the article’s banner. Mostly we used it to drive traffic to Amazon for the affiliate cash. Finally, that too came down.

I transferred hosting to yet another company, one which, I daresay, has much more to offer and at a better price. So today, on January 1 of the new year, the site goes live again for the first time in years.

Happy New Year!
